This is a follow-up post to Digital Art Copyism, which I recommend reading to get a background as to why the Media Lab at the Metropolitan Museum has been working on this piece.

Goals
  • Everyone has a copy of clouds of their own
  • Everyone understands at least what the steps are and what the tools look like
  • Everyone understands what in-depth knowledge of the techniques are needed for good conservation

We are developing an art copyist program around art that exists in some way as electronic bits. The first piece to be recreated is Super Mario Clouds by Cory Arcangel .

Late last year the Met ran a show called Regarding Warhol, which had a ton of interesting contemporary pieces. Ai Wei-Wei had a Coca-Cola Vase, Andy Warhol had his Silver Clouds. But the piece that I was happily surprised to see was near the end, Cory Arcangel's Super Mario Clouds. For this piece, Cory modified an original Super Mario Bros videogame to remove everything but the background and the clouds. The Whitney actually has a fun and in-depth description (and activities!) on their Whitney Kids page.
